Radio Dialysis

A radio programme featuring King's College Hospital haemodialysis unit.

'Radio Dialysis' interviews patients, doctors, nurses and renal techinicians to explore dialysis treatment at a busy inner London dialysis unit.

Treating over a 100 patients on a weekly basis the unit serves the local area and patients from around south east London. Based in the hospital itself it is one of 5 units run and managed by the renal unit.

The programme explores kidney failure and how this life saving treatment, by dialysis machine, is delivered for patients. In turn patients describe their experiences of coming to the unit three times a week and what led them to start on dialysis.

The voices are set against a backdrop of recordings made in the unit, the dialysis machines themselves and the water treatment facilities. These 'source' sounds were also processed and extended to complete the work.

Many thanks to patients Elaine Simon, Mervin Bovell and Guilia Maestranzi for their contributions. Staff interviewed were Dr Claire Sharpe (Consultant Nephrologist) & Dr Behzad Ansari (Associate Specialist), Ian Morgan (Chief Techinician), Cynthia Davis and Howard Cox (Renal Nurses).

The programme was made with the full support and consent of the renal unit and hospital. Thanks also to Rachel Mwansa, Janet Allman, Katrina Casely-Ready, Gary Maul and Barry Tomkins for their help and assistance.

The work was first broadcast in central London on Resonance104.4FM on Monday 17th December 2007 as part of the Radia Network show. 15 radio stations from around Europe contribute material to this weekly show.
